Apple Inc. For updated MacBook Pro laptops this year with much faster processors, updated displays, and magnetic charger return, according to someone familiar with the plans.
The new laptops are set to come with two screen sizes, the 14-inch model codenamed J314 and the 16-inch version internally called J316. Both will use next-generation versions of Apple’s in-house Mac processors, which have been upgraded with More cores And improved graphics, said the person who asked not to be named because the products had not been announced yet.
These devices will be Apple’s first high-end laptops to move away from Intel components. The company updated the base of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with its M1 chip in November, to widely positive reviews.
In addition to more powerful chips, Apple also plans to increase the display in the new MacBook Pro with brighter panels and higher contrast, the person said. The new Macs will look similar to the current versions, albeit with slight design changes. Apple aims to launch the new MacBook Pro around the middle of the year.
An Apple spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The main change in new computers will be how they charge. Over the past five years, Apple has relied on USB-C ports to transmit power and data on its laptops, making it compatible with other manufacturers’ chargers. But the company is now returning MagSafe, the magnetic power adapter which means any accidental pulling of the power cable will simply disconnect it from the laptop rather than pulling the computer out entirely. It was a favorite feature of the company’s line of laptops that was first introduced in 2006 and has recently revived the latest lineup of iPhones.
The person said that MagSafe’s return with the next MacBook Pro will also allow these laptops to charge at a faster rate. The connector will be similar to the extended pill shape design of the older MagSafe port.
Despite moving away from USB-C for charging, Apple will continue to include multiple USB-C ports on future Macs.
In developing its next line of Mac laptop computers, Apple has also tested versions that remove the Touch Bar from laptop keyboards. The Touch Bar, introduced as part of a recent MacBook Pro redesign in 2016, transforms the keyboard’s top row of function keys into a touchscreen bar that can display a variety of information and a variable set of controls to adapt to applications and tasks. Some professional users said they found the control system to be less convenient than the physical keys.
Apple is also planning to redesign the MacBook Air, but it isn’t expected to be released until long after the upcoming MacBook Pro is released.
